This optional module introduces participants to the basics of trade finance. It compares and contrasts pre- and post-shipment financing and lays out the basic trade finance instruments and methods available to exporters. It concludes by presenting some export financing options and details some strategies to help exporters negotiate a payment arrangement in the most advantageous manner possible for their business.

Once participants have completed this core module, they will be able to:

 Identify the different forms of pre and post-shipment financing appropriate for a particular transaction;
 Apply pre and post-shipment trade financing options; and
Negotiate payment terms with international buyers.
